2020 President’s Year End Summary
2020 December Meeting/Annual Meeting

I’d like to introduce and thank the current board officers and members.  They have been a great group to work with.
  • Past President, Anne Ake
  • Vice President, B. David Brooks
  • Treasurer,  Daphne Clark
  • Membership Chair,  Mary Jo Capra
  • Secretary, Deb Fable
  • Members at Large, Caroline Davis, Abby Biggers, and Dean Resch
Quite a year for all of us.  We started off with great plans for the year and, as with everyone, those plans certainly changed.

We did have a wonderful "Paint Party" and "Clean Up Day" in January to spruce up our Friends building. A great group showed up, worked hard, and got to know each other.
In February, we had an excellent presentation on Florida Black Bears.  It was well attended and pizzas were donated by Papparazzi's.  Thanks to them.
And, then... all other activities were canceled or altered as we all know.  But, we have been busy behind the scenes on an important fund raiser to replace the children's playground that was destroyed by Hurricane Michael.  That goal is 60 thousand dollars.  You will see more publicity coming out about that and you can also donate now.
We received some meaningful memorial donations from various families. And, we also received a donation of a car that we sold.  Those funds will directly help with the playground project.

Our aluminum can recycling has been growing as publicity about the availability to drop off at the park has spread.  I'd like to recognize David Brooks for his tireless work on the project.  He even designed and made a sorting table that has streamlined the process considerably.  Thank you!
So, even with the uncertainty of the next several months, we look forward to continuing these projects.  We may also have some Zoom type presentations for our members.
Now, regarding our slate of officers and board members for 2021.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, our slate has changed from what was emailed to you.

The new Board slate that was elected are:
  • President, Parry Knauss  (I have agreed to continue on an interim basis for a few months)
  • Vice President, Bill David Brooks
  • Treasurer, Daphne Clark
  • Secretary, Debbie Fable
  • Membership Secretary, Mary Jo Capra
  • Members at Large:  Caroline Davis, Dean Resch, Karen Fitzsimmons and Kimberly Hardin

Thank you to our new board and our membership and support, we appreciate you!

2019 President’s Year End Summary

I’d like to thank the  board officers and members.  They have been a great group to work with this year.  We had quite a productive year:

  • Updated our Website and social media for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.  Please find us at our three sites and “Like” us and share to others.  We would all like to hear from you!!
  • Purchased new AV equipment for the Friends building to enhance presentations
  • Purchased a commercial lawnmower for the park which was badly needed
  • Purchased new tires for a park ATV
  • Covered the cost of a hydraulic hammer rental that was used to renovate the gate entry area
  • Purchased a new UTV with a lift bed for the park.  It can also be used to transport beach rescue victims to EMS trucks
  • Got set up on Amazon Smiles.  If you shop Amazon you can click on Smiles and designate Friends.  A percentage of purchases goes to us.
  • Held the Chili Cookout and Bonfire  - the Bay County Story Tellers participated again this year
  • Participated in the Comcast Cares Day Beach Clean Up in the park.  It was very successful with close to 200 participants.  We get a grant from Comcast based on the number of volunteers we get that day
  • Had a booth at Earth Day celebration in Panama City
  • Had two membership programs. In February, Scott Jackson and Jennifer Sims presented “Dark Skies Turtle Lighting Project in Bay, Gulf, and Franklin Counties.”  In May, Dr. John Carlson presented "Distribution and Community Structure of Coastal Sharks in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico."
  • Ironman was cancelled due to the hurricane
  • Members Annual Meeting and Christmas Party
A MAJOR focus for us in the coming years will be fund raising. The park has tremendous needs due to the storm.  Remember that all funds raised by Friends stay in the park. We would like to see more individual and corporate contributions.  And, if you have ideas for fund raising, do let us know.
Wishing a prosperous new year to all.

Parry Knauss
President
